Background:
The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County rain garden was installed
as part of the Stormwater Management in Your Backyard program that involved the
Master Gardeners of Cape May County.
Type of Runoff Managed:
This rain garden manages stormwater from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of
Cape May County's rooftop. In this case, roof gutters are not present except for over the entrance of the building. However, the size of the garden was still designed for a portion of the the rooftop based on a 1.25" storm event.
Installation:
Rutgers Cooperative Extension Faculty and Staff and approximately twenty Master Gardeners of Cape May County were present for the installation of the rain garden in December 2007. A shallow trench was prepared along the roof drip line of this building. This helped convey water into the rain garden absent a gutter and downspout. No soil amendments were needed because of the sandy native soils present in this region of the state. Plants were purchased from nurseries and some were donated by Master Gardeners who took cuttings from their own gardens.
