Background:
The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Monmouth County rain garden was
installed as part of the Stormwater Management in Your Backyard program that
trained the Master Gardeners of Monmouth County.
Type of Runoff Managed:
This rain garden manages stormwater from a portion the Ag Building's parking lot. With an average rainfall of 44 inches a year, this rain garden intercepts, treats, and infiltrates approximately 875,000 gallons of stormwater a year.
Installation:
Approximately twenty Master Gardeners of Monmouth County were present for
the installation of the rain garden in July 2007. Sand, leaf mulch, and pine bark were
added to the rain garden. Also, rip rap was added to dissipate the energy of stormwater before it enters the rain garden. Donations of time and supplies were
provided by the Master Gardeners of Monmouth County, Coastal Nursery, Landex
Nursery, Freehold Soil Conservation District, Guardian Tree & Turf, Inc., Pinelands
Nursery, Manasquan River Watershed Association, Monmouth County Highway
Department, Monmouth County Shade Tree Commission, Ocean Township Municipal
Recycling Department, and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program. The rain garden installation was featured in the Community Reporter - click
