The Scottish Rite Theatre rain garden was installed to beautify the site and to intercept, treat, and infiltrate stormwater runoff from a portion of the roof.
This rain garden is part of the Cooper River Watershed. The Cooper River Watershed is characterized by extensive residential and commercial development, and as a result, its streams are severely impacted by increased stormwater runoff. To address the water quality issues associated with increased stormwater runoff, demonstration projects like this rain garden are essential.
This rain garden manages stormwater runoff from a portion of the roof via downspouts that have been fitted with corrugated PVC pipe extensions. These pipe extensions are buried underground, and they convey the stormwater from the downspouts to the rain garden.
The Scottish Rite Theatre rain garden was installed in April 2012 by The Brickman Group, Ltd. Staff from Brickman who completed the Gloucester County Rain Garden Training for Professional Landscapers Programdesigned and installed this rain garden.
The rain garden captures roof runoff from three downspouts which were redirected underground and fitted with corrugated PVC pipe extensions to serve as the inlet for the rain garden. The inlets release the water to the center of the rain garden where Delaware River stone has been placed to slow the velocity of the incoming runoff. Native plants were installed, and then a layer of mulch was spread around them.
Approval to install this rain garden was granted by the Scottish Rite Theatre. This rain garden was funded by a 319(h) grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
