History:
The James G. Atkinson Memorial Park rain garden was installed as part of the park's beautification efforts. In addition to the rain garden installation, one of the park's retention basins and swales were naturalized. This effort was accomplished through a partnership between the Camden County Soil Conservation District, Gloucester County Soil Conservation District, Gloucester County Parks Department, Gloucester County Landscape Architect, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Gloucester County, and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program.
Type of Runoff Managed:
This rain garden manages stormwater from the James G. Atkinson Memorial Park's amphitheater lawn area and a portion of the amphitheater building via a downspout that is directed towards the rain garden. Before the rain garden was installed, Bethel
Lake received the runoff from this area.
Installation:
Approximately ten Master Gardeners of
Gloucester
County were present for the
installation of this rain garden in June
2009, which was approved by the Gloucester
County
Landscape Architect,
Alan Koch. In addition to the Master Gardeners, Rutgers
Cooperative Extension faculty and staff, Camden County Soil Conservation District, Gloucester County Soil Conservation District, and the Gloucester County Parks
Department assisted with the
installation of the rain garden.
