    History:

The Upper Raritan Watershed Association rain garden was installed to serve as a
demonstration rain garden to educate homeowners, business owners and
government facilities on how rain gardens can minimize impacts to nearby waterways.

    Type of Runoff Managed:

This rain garden was designed to manage runoff from the rooftop of the Nature
Center building.  The rain garden has an area of 200 square feet, treating stormwater
from a drainage area of 900 feet. When a storm greater than 1.25 inches occurs, the
overflow of water will be directed into the surrounding grassed area.

    Installation:

Approximately ten Master Gardeners of Morris County, Upper Raritan Watershed
Association staff, Raritan Highlands Compact, and Rutgers Cooperative Extension
Water Resources staff and faculty volunteered their time to help install this rain
garden.  During the installation, both topsoil and sand were added to backfill the rain
garden, maximizing this rain gardens infiltrative capacity.
