History:
The Van Derveer Elementary School rain gardens were installed to intercept, treat, and infiltrate stormwater runoff from the roof and were also used to teach the fourth grade students about watersheds, the importance of rain gardens, and how to maintain the gardens. Aside from the educational benefits to the students, the rain gardens at Van Derveer Elementary School will serve as a demonstration to the larger community, especially those in the Peters Brook watershed (Somerville, Bridgewater, Raritan), of a simple, low-cost and low-maintenance way that the average homeowner can help improve water quality.
Type of Runoff Managed:
The rain gardens manage stormwater runoff from the roof of the Van Derveer Elementary School. Installation:
Over 100 fourth grade students at Van Derveer Elementary School helped plant these two 450 square foot rain gardens in the school's outdoor classroom. The rain garden sites were prepared by staff from the New Jersey Water Supply Authority's Watershed Protection Programs Division, Somerset County Parks Commission, and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program.
