History:
The Fanwood Memorial Library rain garden was installed as part of the
Stormwater Management in Your Backyard program that trained the Master
Gardeners of Union County.
Type of Runoff Managed:
This rain garden manages stormwater from the Fanwood Memorial Library's rooftop. Before the rain garden was installed, water was conveyed from a downspout to the road via an underground PVC pipe.
Installation:
Approximately fifteen volunteers, which included the Master Gardeners of Union
County, members of the Rahway River Association, and members of the Fanwood
Environmental Commission, were present for the installation of the rain garden in Fall
2005, which was approved by the Mayor of Fanwood and the Fanwood Memorial
Library. Fanwood Public Works volunteered their time to assist with the rain garden
installation. On September 10, 2006, the rain garden was dedicated to Steven A.
Clark. The underground PVC pipe was exposed and cut to convey water into the rain garden and not into the road. The PVC pipe, however, continued to serve as an overflow device during large storm events.
