History:
The Springfield Township Municipal Annex Building rain garden was installed to
serve as a model for Springfield residents who are interested in controlling polluted runoff and to help recharge the groundwater. The project was initiated by a Master Gardener who was previously trained by Rutgers Cooperative Extension and served on the Springfield Environmental Commission. The installation project included a training workshop for the general public and municipal officials that was held onsite during the installation and planting process.
Type of Runoff Managed:
This rain garden manages stormwater from the rooftop of the Springfield Township Municipal Annex Building's. The existing downspout was extended and redirected into
the newly installed rain garden.
Installation:
Approximately fifteen volunteers, which included the Master Gardeners of Union
County and members of the Springfield Environmental Commission, were present for
the installation of the rain garden in May 2007, which was approved by the Mayor of
Springfield Township. The Springfield Township Department of Public Works
provided in-kind assistance with the rain garden installation.
