History:
The Walnut Avenue Elementary School rain garden was installed as part of
the Stormwater Management in Your Backyard program that trained the Master
Gardeners of Union County.
Type of Runoff Managed:
This rain garden manages stormwater runoff from a portion of the Walnut Avenue Elementary School's parking lot.
Installation:
Approximately fifteen volunteers, including the Master Gardeners of
Union County and members of the Rahway River Association were present for
the installation of the rain garden in Fall 2005, which was approved by the Walnut
Avenue Elementary School Principal. The Cranford Township Department of
Public Works provided in-kind assistance with the rain garden installation. Additional in-kind support and funding was provided by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program.

Maintenance:
The rain garden is maintained by the Master Gardeners of Union County. In Spring
2008, Home Depot along with the teachers and students of Walnut Avenue
Elementary School, helped maintain the rain garden during a Gardening Clean-up
Day.
